Ken Smithmier

Shelbyville and Strongman 057

In my past I have been: a runner,  weightlifter on and off, handball player for 20 years. I have jumped out of helicopters, ridden in submarines, hiked in the desert, rappelled cliff faces, white water canoed, and done any other kind of risky thing I could find.  At one point in my life the stupidity of the event was matched only by my willingness to do it.

For my real job I work at a hospital.

On the evening of April 7, 2008, I was reading a fitness magazine and found an article on the “stuff” called CrossFit.  I began the very next day with a WOD, which happened to be Murph.  I now celebrate my CF anniversary with Murph each April 8.  I choose to CrossFit because I get to make up crazy workouts that seemingly sane people will do without question.

I am Level I Certified (April, 2009) but what I really like to do is lift, pull, push, throw, carry awkward and heavy things. Strongman Cert has eluded me because of the schedules of life but I still have my sights on it.

Ken’s Diet: Strict Paleo now. I miss the butter and cream but it sure makes eating fairly simple. I have bumped up the fish oil to between 8 and 10gm/day, 10000 IU Vitamin D3.

What Is CrossFit:CrossFit is  what cavemen did as part of daily living, they just didn’t have the Internet yet.

Jim Martinez

Your sporting/coaching/exercise/work background…

  • I have played almost every sport imaginable to some degree, from football and golf (former PGA member) to mountain climbing. . Also, a former medic, where I served as a cadre member for the US Army’s Northern Warfare Training Center and the US Army High Altitude Rescue Team. Summited Mt. McKinley (1984) along with numerous other Alaskan peaks most of which I do not know the name. My current position is with Decatur Memorial Hospital as a Certified Athletic Trainer. NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

How/When you got started in CrossFit…

  • I have never been afraid of anything in my life. The bigger the risk the more I liked it. In fact, the thing I liked about football was I got to hit someone as hard as I wanted and not get thrown in jail.  One thing has always bothered me…the unknown, not the dark room so to speak…but more of what might be in it. I became involved with CrossFit in 2008 by accident; Ken Smithmier brought it up in conversation, about our enhancement program. I started researching it and soon after started doing the main site WOD’s. I’ve been hooked ever since, and by the way….I’m not so intimidated by the unknown anymore.

Why do you personally CrossFit?

  • To take as many breaths as possible for (my life)time.

Your current level of CrossFit certification/experience…

  • Level I – Indy (09), CrossFit Football – Indy (09)

Jim’s Diet:True CrossFit spirit eating methodology. Constantly varied functional eating performed across odd nutritional domains usually executed at high intensity. Stop by sometime during one of my feeding sessions and you’ll see. Seriously though, I Zone (20 blocks 2xfat) most of the time, sometimes increase fat depending on how I feel. My goal is to go straight paleo by end of 2010. Also, intermittent and random fasting and I cheat once a week. I routinely supplement with a large quantity of fish oil, don’t ask how much, I won’t tell you.

What Is CrossFit:CrossFit – that which enhances life. Webster may want to include this in their definition (if they have one).

Favorite CrossFit Quote:I don’t know if this is so much of a CrossFit quote but I like it. “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glories triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

Cole Namken

Shelbyville and Strongman 044

Cole began with running cross country and track in college.  He has been active military and is currently in the National Guard.  His “part time” job is at CAT.  His full time job is CrossFit.

About four years ago Cole began incorporating CrossFit during active duty to get ready for the 2005 Best Ranger.  He also used CrossFit as part of his physical fitness plan for his students and subordinates.  Due to his high level of competitiveness he can use CrossFit to compete against others, himself or the stopwatch.  Cole also enjoys CrossFit because it can never get boring, due to the endless skills one can improve on.  Cole has always been fit but CrossFit helped him become an athlete.

Cole is Level I Certified (April, 2009) and Olympic Lifting Certified (March, 2010).

Cole’s Diet: 16-18 blocks plaeo zone (1/2 carbs replaced with fat) mostly grassfed meat, supplement with 2000-4000IU of vitamin D3 and 4000-6000mg of fish oil.

What Is CrossFit: It is a commitment to push yourself out of your comfort zone both mentally and physically in order to prepare for anything.

Favorite CrossFit Quote: “By preparing for the unknown and unknowable you are preparing to suck less at life.” – Unknown.

Josh Newton

pics 001

Josh Newton is a Crossfit Level I certified trainer (Columbus, OH. Jan ‘10) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fitness and Sport from Millikin University.  Josh played football for Millikin University during the 2008 season as well.  He is also certified as a personal trainer through the National Council on Strength and Fitness.  His current position is with Decatur Memorial Hospital as an Exercise Specialist in the Sports Enhancement Department.  His passion is to coach and help people push through and above their perceived limitations about themselves.

Josh crossfits because he enjoys the competition, the challenge, and the humility that it brings along with the “unknowable” factor that always keeps him guessing.  He believes that Crossfit is the best way to develop a well rounded physical human being and athlete who wants to prepare for competition, functionality, or any of the numerous challenges that life brings.

Josh’s diet consist of Paleo + Dairy which includes whole milk and cheese.  Since switching to Paleo in Jan. 2010 he has seen tremendous increase in energy, performance, and has cut body fat percent by 1.5%.  He also supplements the Robb Wolf recommended daily intake of Omega 3 fish oil, which is the equivalent of eating a small pond worth of fish.

What is Crossfit? On average, a 10-15 minute psychological evaluation of yourself, who you are, and what you’re really made of.  It’s also a really cool way to do things you did when you were a kid and be in shape.

Quote:  “If you’re not enough without it, you’ll never be enough with it.”

Patrick Larry

pics 034

Pat is a runner by trade, he ran track and cross country through nearly every season of high school and college (D-III) and continues to train/run in recreational fashion to this day.  Pat has been participating in martial arts since the age of 12 and had the opportunity to instruct classes for 4 years under Michael Donovan of US Yoshukai Karate.  Pat is currently a clinical certified athletic trainer for DMH and Dr. Becton.

In late 2008 Pat was a “test-subject” for Jim and the CrossFit programming as it related to Sports Enhancement.  After some quick research Pat deemed this “stuff” as his brand of crazy intensity, like that of martial arts and has been CrossFitting since.  Pat continues and coaches CrossFit because he enjoys the intensity, challenge and the results in the way he feels physically and mentally.

Pat holds a Running Certification (November, 2009) and is scheduled for Level I in early 2010.

Pat’s Diet: Paleo+Dairy and pretty successful at it.  He is working on including more intermittent fasting and has seen with the diet and fasting changes that his performace has really improved!!!

What Is CrossFit: CrossFit is simply a collection of tools (exercise modalities, recovery, and diet) based on our natural function and design, all of which are proven to enhance that very same functionality.

Favorite CrossFit Quote: “Intentionally placing yourself in the position of having to complete a task when you don’t know if you can is the single best way of preparing to be in that position unintentionally.” – Mark Rippetoe.

Jayson Reising

pics 013Jayson is a Level I certified instructor.  He participated in football and track in high school where he practiced a very non-functional “Globo-Gym” type training regimen.  In college he found CrossFit through his involvement in sports that required advanced levels of endurance, power, agility, flexibility, explosiveness and coordination.

While becoming involved in MMA and boxing after high school he quickly found he was in no shape to compete in these particular sports because of his type of “non-functional” training.  He noticed that hte overwhelming majority of his fellow competitors were involved in CrossFit and quickly became involved himself.  Jayson immediately enrolled in an elements class at CrossFit SI at Carbondale and credits their affiliate for laying the foundation of his skills and knowledge of the fundamental ideas of CrossFit.  Then came his first WOD…  “Fight Gone Bad” and since that dreadful day he has been hooked.  He noticed a tremendous acceleration in his ability to compete and overall enhanced state of well being.  His only regret is kno knowing about CrossFit while in high school, which he fells would have made him a better athlete.

The social and competitive aspect is what drives his desire and passion for CrossFit.

Jayson has recently moved from a Zone diet to a Paleo+Dairy regimen with approximately 2,400mg of fish oil.  Since his diet changes he has noticed better performances and recovery, along with decreased body fat accompanied with an increase in muscle mass.

The athletes and general community of CrossFit Enhance just push his desire even more.  Jayson’s drive and motivation will never be questioned.  CrossFit is a major part of Jayson’s life and he is proud to be an instructor at CrossFit Enhance.

Darin Buttz

pics 012v1

Darin was a three-sport athlete at Mt. Zion High School playing Football, Baseball and Basketball (he likens his skills to that of Larry Bird).  After the high school years he went on to get and undergraduate and Masters Degree in Athletic Training.  Currently he is the Athletic Training Outreach Coordinator with DMH Sports Medicine.

Darin tells how he started CrossFit, “One cold morning in January 2009 some ‘old guy’ said ‘meet me at work at 8am…  I want to start doing this new workout thingy… called CrossFit.’  Little did I know that we were going to start this ‘thingy’ with the Filthy Fifty.  I got a DNF!!!  I was on and off for about 6 months, then became fully committed in October of 2009.”

Darin chooses to CrossFit because unlike anything else he has ever tried, this has what he calls “Competition Compatibility.”  The source of motivation is up to the individual.  You can compete against yourself, the clock, or someone else.  Along with that Darin hopes to be Level I and CrossFit Kid certified within the year.  He has been working as a CrossFit Enhance instructor since January of 2010.

Darin’s Diet: Paleo+Dairy with intermittent fasting.  He supplements with 5000 IU of D3 and 7200-9600mg of fish oil daily.

What is CrossFit?: Full range of motion functional movements and strength training as hard and as fast as you can…  FOR TIME!!!

Jason Danner

pics 017Your sporting/coaching/exercise/work background:

I am a former football and baseball player turned power lifter, turned Olympic lifter, trund CrossFitter.  I graduated from Western Illinois University in May 2009 with a BS in Law Enforcement and hope to begin that career soon.

How/When you got started with CrossFit:

I started CrossFit merely as a way to break away from the “globo gym” style of workout.  A friend approached me about this thing called CrossFit and I told him I would be willing to try it.  I walked into CrossFit Enhance in January 2010 and have been hooked ever since.

Why do you personally CrossFit?

It was a way to push myself beyond my perceived limits.  CrossFit has led me to do things that a year ago I would have deemed impossible (muscle up).  I enjoy/releish competition and love to prove people that I can do anything.  CrossFit challenged my mental and physical toughness and discipline.  I enjoy walking through those doors every day to see what kind of obstacles I can conquer.

Current Level of Certification:

USAW Level I Olympic Weightlifting coach.  I plan on taking the USAW Club Coach Cert in the near future.

Diet:  Paleo+Dairy, with more cheats than I should, but a massive improvement from where I was (302lbs. eating anything within reach).

CrossFit is not merely a fitness regimen, it is a LIFESTYLE.  CrossFit is a sequence of obstacles placed before you to callenge your mental ad physical toughness.  It humbles you by pointing out your weaknesses but instills great pride when you are able to turn those weaknesses into strengths.  CrossFit WORKS!!!

Bob Winskill

Sporting/Coaching/Exercise/Work Background: To be quite honest, I don’t have an extensive sporting background.  I wasn’t blessed with a whole lot of athletic ability and was usually one of the last kids picked for kickball, so I never got into organized sports.  After high school, I became interested in weight lifting.  Absolutely love the push/pull concept becasue it did not take a whole lot of coordination, but always was bored with it.  this usually let to an again/off again training.

Bob actually began CrossFit because of his wife, Dawn.  Around October of 2009 Dawn got tired of Bob’s hind side growing roots in the couch.  She had been doing CrossFit Enhance for a while and wanted him to try it.  He got through Elements and has never looked back.

Bob choose CrossFit because of the constantly varied aspect.  “You never know what’s coming, so it pretty tough to get bored.”  He also enjoys the euphoric feeling when you can’t breathe, move, and swear that somewhere during the WOD you have coughed up a lung.

Bob is currently a Level I instructor and is scheduled for the Coaches Prep Course in August.

Paleo+Dairy+Fish Oil+Iron

What is CrossFit? One of the toughest, but certainly one of the best, things I have ever done.

Nate Shelsta

Nate is another former high school athlete turned Athletic Trainer.  He received a bachelors in athletic training in 2000 and a Masters in sport management in 2002.  Currently he works as a clinical athletic trainer at DMH.

Nate was a regular workout “guy” doing the standard “globo” programs and weight routines with occassional excessive cardio, but not satisfied with results.  Along with that Nate ate what the “experts” say was a healthy diet (high carb/low fat) but felt as though he was becomming more deconditioned over time.  In August of 2009 (25th) he began CrossFit after seeing some amazing results from his coworkers.  After starting CrossFit and changing his diet Nate lost 25 pounds and is in the best shape of his life.  Nate is a professed junkie of CrossFit and coaches to spread the gospel of how CrossFit can change your life.

Nate plans to become Level I and Kettlebell certified within the year.

Why CrossFit? Challenge, Comradery, Competition, RESULTS

Diet: Paleo+Dairy, 4800mg fish oil, 6000IU Vit D3, and cutting weekly cheats.

“The magic is in the movement, the art is in the programming, the science is in the explanation, and the fun is in the community.” –Coach Glassman

Dawn Winskill

Dawn started doing Crossfit through the main site in June of 2009.  She had previously taught aerobic, body sculpting, basic training workouts, and Kids Get Fit programs, and has never seen results like she does with Crossfit.  She still teaches aerobics and strength training classes on her days off from Crossfit.

Dawn is a Level I Certified Crossfit Instructor.  She has taken the personal course through Peen Foster and is a Certified Personal Trainer through NCSF.  She also plans on becoming Crossfit Kids Certified in October 2010.  She attended Kansas City Business College and currently works full time at the Sullivan Medical Center as a certified MA.

Her current diet is Paleo plus Dairy supplemented with Omega 3 fish oil.

Crossfit to Dawn is a high intensity, insane workout that will change your body, mind, and life.
